NSW: Lifetime Registration Is Different From an Annual Permit
The NSW Office of Local Government's registration and permit guide, checked 14 October 2026, says the registration fee is paid once and covers the animal's lifetime in NSW. It separately lists annual permits for non-desexed cats over four months, restricted dog breeds and dogs declared dangerous. The page displays an update date of 1 July 2024; follow its current fee links and check your circumstances rather than using an old dollar amount.
The separate pet registration fee schedule, updated 1 July 2026 and checked 14 October 2026, lists standard registration of $84 for a dog and $74 for a cat. These are the calculator's unpaid initial defaults. Eligible concessions, exemptions and desexed shelter/rehoming categories can change the amount; do not assume the standard fee is payable for every animal.
The non-desexed fee schedule separately lists a $198 additional once-only dog fee over six months and a $104 annual permit for non-desexed cats over four months, subject to applicable exemptions. The annual dog permit schedule lists $247 for restricted or declared dangerous dogs. Both pages display 1 July 2026 updates and were checked 14 October 2026. The calculator does not infer these circumstances from a breed or adoption choice: enter the applicable once-only and annual amounts after checking the actual registration record and authority.
Do not multiply a lifetime registration fee by a pet's modeled lifespan. Do not assume a permit applies to every dog or cat. This distinction also means the earlier article's NSW annual desexing-savings calculation was invalid.

Desexing and Fee Comparisons
If the applicable schedule has different fees, compare the actual categories for the same animal and payment period. Do not subtract the lowest desexed amount from the highest undesexed amount across unrelated councils and call that your saving. Ask your vet about the clinical decision and timing separately from fee arithmetic.
