How the budget works

An estimate you can inspect

PawCost adds acquisition, setup and care costs for your selected breed, state and lifestyle. All amounts are AUD. Replace model line items with quotes from your own providers.

Review status

Price evidence and model presentation reviewed 14 October 2026. PawCost is an editable budget illustration. Only the named NSW standard initial fees are verified calculator price defaults. Other amounts are illustrative starting assumptions, not measured market ranges, live quotes or spending limits. The checked provider observations below verify their specific scope; they do not validate every profile or establish national prices for all 65 breeds.

What each input means

Lower, middle and higher settings explore model choices. Actual quotes can fall outside them. These classifications describe the current release scope; no representative Australian price survey is claimed.

Purchase and adoption β€” Illustrative

All breed ranges are starting amounts, not advertised-price bounds. Inclusions vary: set any already-included procedure to $0, including breeder purchases.

NSW standard initial registration β€” Verified specific fee

Unpaid standard dog $84 / cat $74, official schedule updated 1 July 2026. Actual eligibility, concessions, prior payment and extra permits must be checked.

Other registration and permits β€” Illustrative

Other state bands are placeholders, not council schedules. NSW $0 annual is an assumption of no special permit, not a verified entitlement.

Routine vet care and initial vaccines β€” Illustrative

The default budgets two separate consultations per year, not a recommended schedule. Replace routine care with a quote including appropriate vaccines. A vaccine visit may already include a consultation; avoid counting it twice.

Desexing and microchipping β€” Illustrative

Existing ranges are not current quotes. Check sex, age, weight, inclusions and any amount already included in acquisition.

Food β€” Illustrative

Monthly allocations have no specified product, ration or delivered-price basis. Use suitable food quantities and actual repeat prices; a budget level is not nutritional advice.

Grooming β€” Illustrative

Session prices and intervals are model choices. Confirm coat, size, service, home care and appointment frequency. A checked local quote can exceed the displayed higher amount.

Insurance β€” Illustrative

No policy quote is embedded. Age, address, cover, limits and excess matter. Premiums stay constant in the lifetime illustration; claims are not modeled.

Parasite prevention β€” Illustrative

Annual allocations do not specify a product, dose or treatment plan. Ask your vet what applies, then enter its actual cost without overlapping products.

Starter supplies and replacement toys β€” Illustrative

These are editable allowances without a priced basket. Initial supplies count in year one; replacement toys start in year two as a budgeting convention.

Training β€” Illustrative

Basic/advanced are cost allocations, not equivalent course specifications or required treatment. Match course length and inclusions to your quote.

Boarding, walking and daycare β€” Illustrative

Rates are placeholders. Compare dates, duration, individual/group care, food, transport and surcharges. Defaults assume selected weekly services for 52 weeks and seven nights per boarding week.

Cat litter β€” Illustrative

Annual allocations have no product or consumption basis. Use actual tray needs and replacement usage; a living-situation choice is not a care recommendation.

Lifespan and care-profile traits β€” Illustrative

Lifespan ranges are scenario horizons, not survival forecasts. Weight and filter traits are broad profile assumptions, not individual feeding, dosing or suitability advice.

Reserve and custom amounts β€” User choice

Your whole-dollar amounts replace assumptions. Reserve contributions start in year one and remain outside spending; no amount is recommended or guaranteed adequate.

Three useful time horizons

  • Monthly: the annual ongoing total divided by 12. It smooths occasional costs; it is not a monthly invoice.
  • First year: acquisition, initial supplies and procedures, routine care, insurance if selected, training and selected boarding/walking/daycare for a full year. Adoption starts with initial vaccines, microchipping and desexing marked included; confirm or change each inclusion and enter any separate cost.
  • Lifetime: first year plus ongoing annual costs for subsequent years. The central estimate uses the rounded midpoint of the breed lifespan range. Lower and higher scenarios use the shorter and longer lifespan respectively. Inflation and age-related premium changes are not modeled.

Spending choices and local fees

Budget, mid-range and premium select lower, middle and higher spending assumptions. Most state and price benchmarks still lack complete source verification. A larger budget does not guarantee a better product or outcome.

Registration has separate once-only and annual rows. NSW defaults use standard unpaid initial registration of $84 for a dog or $74 for a cat, and $0 annual permits. NSW official fees were updated 1 July 2026 and checked 14 October 2026. Already paid fees, adoption exemptions, concessions and surcharges can differ: enter what is still payable. No non-desexed status, special dog classification or exemption is inferred from breed or source. Outside NSW, existing annual benchmarks remain unverified; set the annual row to your actual recurring fee and use the once-only row separately.

Adoption initially assumes desexing, microchipping and initial vaccination are included. Confirm the rescue’s inclusions, uncheck any procedure payable separately and edit that first-year amount. Included procedures stay at $0 even if an old custom amount is present; unchecked extras count once in year one. Replacement toys start from year two because starter supplies are a separate setup category.

Optional reserve, separate from spending

The calculator no longer weights condition prices or prevalence labels. Unexpected treatment and dental procedures are excluded from estimated spending. You may enter an annual contingency reserve from year one. It is money set aside, shown separately from every spending total and the chart; it is not predicted spending, a recommended medical amount or a cap on bills. $0 means no reserve planned. Reserve contributions exclude interest and withdrawals.

Listed breed health topics are unverified reference information and do not affect calculations. Insurance premiums are included only when selected; the model does not forecast claims, reimbursements, excesses or exclusions. Ask a vet about care and read the policy before considering cover.

Lifetime spending and reserve contributions use constant prices without inflation or age-related premium changes. The central curve stops accumulating at the rounded midpoint lifespan used by its displayed total; the lower and higher curves use their shorter and longer horizons. Curves hold their final amounts afterward so the chart endpoint agrees with each total.
