A practical dog essentials plan
Use your first-year supplies allowance as a starting budget, then check what is included by the breeder or rescue and what you already own. Food, vet care, grooming and replacement supplies are separate recurring costs.
Before you buy
- Check size, fit, durability and whether an existing item can be reused.
- Get an itemised list of adoption inclusions. Do not budget twice for the same item.
- Keep room for routine care and unexpected bills before adding extras.
Start with everyday needs
Food and water
Bowls and the food your pet is already eating. Ask the current carer about feeding needs before changing products.
Rest and transport
A suitable bed, secure transport and a correctly fitted lead and collar or harness.
Cleaning
Waste bags and cleaning supplies.
Coat and play
Coat-appropriate brush or comb and suitable toys. A home kit does not remove professional grooming needs.
Compare the same food fairly
First match the product, formulation and pack size. Compare the delivered total including shipping and mandatory fees, and separate introductory deals from repeat prices. Check subscription commitments and cancellation terms.
Worked example · hypothetical prices
A 3kg bag at $36 plus $9 delivery costs $15/kg. A 6kg bag at $78 with delivery included costs $13/kg. The larger bag has a lower delivered unit price only if it suits your pet and you can use it before expiry.
Delivered cost per kg = (product price + delivery + required fees − applicable discount) ÷ kilograms. Unit price does not establish nutrition, suitability or value for every pet.
Put your actual recurring food amount back into the calculator. Keep one-off supplies separate from repeat spending.
Shopping and disclosure
